A Successful Year of Community BlueScapes

A Successful Year of Community BlueScapes

At the close of the year, it’s a perfect time to reflect on the progress and successes we have had. Community BlueScapes is now in its fourth year, and we have made progress on many of our projects in 2024. We recently completed two new reedbeds on Barnes Common and, with the help of some keen volunteers, transplanted reeds and irises into them. By Spring next year, this should have bedded in and be supporting the biodiversity in the area. On top of this, the reedbeds will have an impact on our local flood resilience by increasing capacity to hold water in a flooding event as well as helping to filter water that passes through.

We also completed our project on Vine Road by installing a pond to reduce surface water flooding we have seen in previous years. We will be planting wildflowers on the banks which alongside looking great will support biodiversity in the area. Visit the website to see what the pond could look like next year: Have Your Say Today – Vine Road Pond – Community BlueScapes.

The future proofed neighbourhoods work in the Alton estate is moving forward and we had a successful launch event in November. This is an ongoing project, and we will continue to engage with the community to develop future plans in the area.

Get involved with and find out more about our future projects by joining us at the OSO theatre on Sunday 19th January 2025. You will have an opportunity to meet the team, ask questions about our existing and previous projects as well as the chance to enjoy refreshments at the cafe. We hope to see you then!

Wildlife watch:

Cetti’s warbler – This shy bird thrives in reedbeds. You are likely to hear its loud calls and perhaps spot its plump shape near the reedbeds on Barnes Green.

Tip of the month:

Eco-friendly detergents are made from natural ingredients and can help to reduce pollution and your carbon footprint. Consider switching to benefit water quality!
