Cricket On The Common

Cricket On The Common

Now’s the time that cricketers intensify their fitness work ready for season start. Barnes Common Cricket Club, based on the common’s Vine Road ground, kick off our 2023 fixtures in mid-April.

Local cricket in Barnes started close to the Green and the Pond, but the pitch moved to the common in the 1890’s as Barnes expanded rapidly. The new ground was constructed for £40, and records show that a railway carriage provided unique dressing rooms for players.

The Barnes Common Cricket Club (BCCC) continues the tradition of cricket on the common with weekend fixtures, and tours annually to Shropshire and Dorset. We have also toured overseas including India, Australia, and Barbados, writes Peter Eaton, Chair of BCCC.

Each year we carry out extensive post-season works on the cricket square and in March/April hire a heavy roller to prepare the wickets for season start. Our work over recent years has paid dividends with a much improved playing surface.

Our Club was formed originally by husband and wife cricket-fanatics Steve and Lynn Page who master-minded our original fixtures and then our ambitious tours to the sub-continent and Australia. Last year, as a commemoration to their inspiration, we had a pair of benches set up on the Vine Road side of the Common’s pitch boundary.

Starting from modest beginnings we have always played a ‘taverners’ form of non-league cricket and were fortunate to secure our permanent home on the Common in the early 1980’s. Members can play all season or just the occasional match. We have a strong players core but are always keen to sign up local youth members or seniors – like minded cricketers playing to win and play for fun.

The Vine Road ground sits amidst the Common, now managed so wonderfully by the Barnes Common Limited. It’s surrounded by mature woodland, a unique almost rural setting for cricket matches in London. It’s a delight to play here so come and join us as a new player or just come and spectate and enjoy this beautiful environment bathed in natural greenery.

Itching to find a social level of cricket – then come and join us. We are also looking for someone to take on our weekly teas preparation. Interested? then please contact: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected].
