Growers’ Training: Preparing for the growing season

10:00am, Saturday January 20th, 2024

Vine Road Recreation Ground, SW13 0NE

At this month's session, we will explore key considerations to get your growing off to a good start.

You are invited to join our free monthly training sessions to learn more about growing food in harmony with nature. The sessions will introduce you to seasonal topics such as seed sowing, looking after seedlings, and seed saving. We will also introduce the approaches to growing food that are used at the Vine Road Community Growing Project, such as managing soil health through no-dig, composting and water-wise gardening. The sessions provide a practical and supportive way to build skills and confidence in growing your own food. Come and get your hands dirty!

Sessions run at our polytunnel at Vine Road Park every 3rd Saturday of the month from 10am to midday (see exceptions on the calendar), with a new topic each month.

January 20th 2024: Preparing for the growing season

January can often seem like the coldest and darkest part of winter, but it is the perfect time to make preparations for the upcoming growing season. Bringing together the possibilities and practicalities of growing is one of the most exciting ways to get going whilst we wait for the soil to warm and the light to lengthen! In this month’s session, we will explore key considerations to get your growing off to a good start. We will start with techniques for reviewing your motivations and objectives for growing - whether sheer enjoyment or better crop productivity! We will also look at creating an actionable map for tasks, such as reviewing seed collections (what we have, what we need to replenish, or might want to try); checking your growing equipment; considering your growing spaces; and dealing with those pesky tasks left over from the previous year. Join us to get your 2024 growing aspirations off to a good start!
