In the summer season, in the past few years, we have been experiencing fires on the Common regularly. Luckily, and thanks to the vigilance of locals and our team, and with the quick response of the London Fire Brigade, these fires were put out fairly quickly. However, fires are posing an increasing danger to our sensitive habitats, as well as people, with climate change making droughts more severe, and winds stronger.
The spring of 2025 has been the driest spring since records began in 1893, and in May 2025, reservoir levels across England were at 84% of total capacity. This compares to 90% at the end of April in 2022, the spring before the record-hot and dry summer.
We are very likely looking ahead to another drought season, and an increased fire risk. Dry vegetation only needs a spark to catch fire and cause huge damage to our vulnerable grassland and woodland areas.
Please bear in mind that it is not permitted to build a fire or use a disposable BBQ in any of Richmond Borough’s parks and open spaces – this includes sky lanterns and fireworks too. If you smoke cigarettes, make sure they are put out completely and disposed of correctly, and taking rubbish home if no bins are available.
With your help, we can keep people and our natural environment safe.
