Family Learning

Throughout the year we host regular events for the people in the local community to learn more about their local spaces.

Whether is it outdoor art, games, bug hunting, or being a plant detective, there is so much we can discover by taking the time to observe and ask questions! Check out our schedule of Family Learning events and book your place on Eventbrite.

  • Yaffles Family Nature Club (for 3-9 year olds)
    • Yaffles walks are short exploratory adventures in nature for ages 3+. The walks are at a slow pace, and focus on recognising and appreciating what we see on our journey, stopping for games or nature connection activities.
    • These activities take place on the 3rd Saturday of each month, October to May. We take a break for the summer to allow families to explore independently!
    • Sessions last from 10.30-12.00. Child tickets are £2 and accompanying adults are free.
    • Yaffles walks have been taking place on Barnes Common for over 10 years, led by committed local resident Miranda. The walks are now led by our Lifelong Learning Manager, Paddy, who encourages children and adults alike to engage all their senses to notice the wild lives all around us.
  • Eco-Explorers (10-14 year olds)
    • Eco-Explorers activities are curated specifically to engage 10 to 14 year olds in the natural world around them. Activities are designed to engage and excite, helping young people build knowledge, skills, and appreciation of nature, and allowing them to spend time with other like-minded young people.
    • There are 3-4 Eco-Explorers activities which take place seasonally across the year, including a Summer Camp which takes place at the end of July each year.
    • Session durations and costs vary, but we aim to make them accessible to all. There are free places available for the Summer Camp event, for any young people who receive Pupil Premium grand in school.
    • Eco-Explorers started in 2023 with our first Summer Camp. Since then we’ve continued to develop our range of activities to offer opportunities for nature engagement all year around. For more information on the research that underpins our efforts to engage 10-14 year olds you can read a previous blog on this subject here.
