Spending time outdoors in the garden is great for health and wellbeing. However, gardening is often seen as physically strenuous work, something involving lots of bending, stretching and heavy lifting. In reality, there are loads of different tasks to choose from, and at the Community Growing Project, we welcome people with a wide range of physical abilities and energy levels.
We have recently created an accessible area within our large polytunnel. A new wooden path leads the way into the polytunnel. We have installed a wheelchair accessible bed, as well as two desks that can be raised and lowered according to individual need. The desks are suitable for wheelchair users, and can also be used if you prefer to sit rather than stand whilst working. If you find it difficult to bend, the desks can be raised so that you can stand up and work. We also have some raised beds at standing height.
Outside in the growing area, we have raised beds at various heights, where it may also be possible for you to work. The ground is rougher underfoot in these areas.
Our open sessions are very flexible; you’re welcome to come along for part of the session, for example, if a full session is a bit too much. There are lots of lovely spots in the growing area to sit down and take a break while you’re working. You don’t need to bring anything to the sessions, as we have all the tools and equipment needed; just wear suitable clothing for working outdoors. And of course, we’ll provide plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits!
We have open volunteering sessions at the project regularly, as well as various monthly growing groups, and we welcome everyone to come and get involved. If you have any particular questions, or would like to come and see the area before joining in a session, then please do contact us.
