Litter picking

Litter picking is a vital part of our conservation work. It takes many hours and the work of not only staff, but many volunteers.  Some join us every year for our annual clean-up-the-common and some go out weekly in the area near their home. Others litter pick each and every time they are out and about on the common. It really does make a difference.

An increasing number of dog walkers are not only responsible with regard to their own dogs, but will also pick up what others have sometimes left behind, as well as litter picking. Throughout the week, you are also likely to spot our conservation staff, out in the Gator on one of their many ‘bin rounds’, as they collect rubbish from the bins on Barnes Common.

Single use coffee cups constitute a large percentage of rubbish in the bins on the common. These will contaminate your household paper recycling and would need to be collected separately for “coffee cup recycling”. If there is a scheme at your local coffee shop, please take your cup there. Otherwise, why not get yourself a reusable cup?

There is currently no recycling from any of the bins in parks within our borough. If possible, please take recyclable waste home where it can be collected for recycling.

You can help us by volunteering at our annual big litter pick event, joining one of our group sessions, or just picking up rubbish on your own, as you wander along the Common. We can lend you litter pickers and bin bags, please get in touch to arrange pick up.
