Transect Surveying

Transect surveys are an extremely important method of  measuring changes in species’ populations. It involves walking along an existing survey route and recording a named species such as butterflies or dragonflies. We need volunteers for wildlife surveys of various species – please find the current volunteer vacancies here.

For butterflies, the survey ideally happens weekly in suitable weather conditions from the beginning of April until the end of September (26 counts per year). Transect surveying produces extremely valuable information on which species are present and reveals trends such as abundance, or the time of year they are out and about.

Transects are essential to the work of conservation organisations and we have an experienced and friendly team who are always happy to welcome newcomers, show you the route and help get you started. Contact our conservation manager to find out more.
