Eco-Explorers Summer Camp: Children Exploring the Common

In July we held our first Eco-Explorers Summer Camp, welcoming a group of young people each day to explore Barnes Common.

Each day the group took part in a series of different activities and challenges from habitat studies, to map reading and orienteering, to building a stag beetle logger to help wildlife. The group were keen to notice, appreciate, and learn more about the amazing wildlife big and small all around us. We encountered newts, dragonflies, stunning wildflowers, a field mouse, majestic trees and so much more.

By caring for and learning about the wildlife on the Common, the group were able to increase their confidence and on Friday we set up a public engagement stall by the rail station where our participants could share this knowledge with the local community.

It was inspiring to see so many engaged and enthusiastic young people joining us each day and really relishing the opportunity to get outside and explore this incredible green and blue space.

Our next community learning event for families and young people will be the return of our Yaffles Family Nature Club on Saturday October 21st – more information on this in our next newsletter. Become our friend to receive newsletters here.
