Growers’ Training: Seed saving

10:00am, Saturday September 21st, 2024

The Polytunnel at Vine Road Recreation Ground, SW13 0NE

This session will provide a basic practical introduction to seed saving practices.

You are invited to join our free monthly training sessions to learn more about growing food in harmony with nature. The sessions will introduce you to seasonal topics such as seed sowing, looking after seedlings, and seed saving. We will also introduce the approaches to growing food that are used at the Vine Road Community Growing Project, such as managing soil health through no-dig, composting and water-wise gardening. The sessions provide a practical and supportive way to build skills and confidence in growing your own food. Come and get your hands dirty!

Sessions run at our polytunnel at Vine Road Park every 3rd Saturday of the month from 10am to midday (see exceptions on the calendar), with a new topic each month.

21 September - Seed saving

Saving seeds is a satisfying activity which opens up a whole new dimension of engagement with plants. Many of our crops are harvested before the plant goes to seed, and we do not experience the full plant life cycle. Saving your own seeds can save money by reducing or eliminating the need to buy seeds every year. It can also contribute to biodiversity in the garden, maintain access to seed stocks for communities and widen crop diversity. This session will provide a basic practical introduction to seed saving practices.

This talk will take place in the polytunnel in our growing area at Vine Road Rec. Hot drinks can be purchased from the Vine Road Community Café in the Pavilion with a 50% discount for attendees.
