Join us on the Wonderful Weeds walk, a stroll introducing the uses and folklore of wild plants. Our walk will be led by Roy Vickery, who worked at the Natural History Museum for many years, and collects and writes on the folklore of British and Irish plants. On this walk, we imagine ourselves to be back in the 1920s, before the NHS and when people used wild plants for medicine, food, pastimes and much more. This walk is suitable for all ages.

The meeting point for this walk is at the Pavilion at Vine Road Rec.

About Roy Vickery

Botanist and plant flora lecturer Roy Vickery worked at the Natural History Museum for over 40 years, where he remains a Scientific Associate. For over a decade he served as chair, later president and trustee at the South London Botanical Institute, and he was also vice-president of the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland. He has collected, and written about, plant folklore for over four decades, having produced some 140 publications on plant-lore. Roy Vickery worked at the Natural History Museum for many years, collects and writes on the folklore of British and Irish plants. His extensive Plant-Lore Archive covers all aspects of the folklore and traditional uses of plants.

The walk will meet at Vine Road Recreation Ground, where refreshments and cakes are available to purchase, as well as pizzas from The Dough Shack.

Please note no dogs are allowed on this walk except for guide dogs.

This walk is a part of our very popular Autumn Fayre. Come and help us press some apples, marvel at our nature table, decorate a pumpkin with your family and sample our cakes and drinks, or wood fired pizza from The Dough Shack!

Entry to the Fayre is free, while tickets to activities and walks are available on Eventbrite and on the day. Book in advance as popular events may sell out.

TICKETS: All proceeds from ticket sales will support future learning events and we would encourage you, if you can, to pay full price. We do not want cost to be a barrier to our activities, as such we have a limited number of free and concession tickets available, please email us for details.
