The range and scale of work managed by the charity Barnes Common Limited has evolved over recent years. The new name and look reflects the continued work on conservation and biodiversity across Barnes Common and Leg o’ Mutton Reserve, and also encompasses our growing project, lifelong learning program, work in the community, and large projects such as the Vine Road Park development proposal and important Flood Resilience plans across the area.
The Barnes Common Vision and this new name gives a fresh look for the future and will support further growth, allowing even more scope to engage and support the community in all our work. Our new name will underpin new campaigns and funding applications to further the Vision and Mission.
We are proud of our works and how far our organisation has come, making a meaningful contribution in conserving our green spaces for all its inhabitants and for those who share them now and in the future.
Some stats:
- 145 Acres of land managed
- 6000 Volunteer hours annually
- 1050 Barnes Common Friends
Some activities within our vision:
Conservation: Woodland Management
The woodlands management plan means that biodiversity is maintained and enhanced and ensures ecological resilience of the woodland.
Lifelong Learning: Yaffles
Informal, nature based social sessions are a great chance for families to get together, have fun, discover more about their local area, and how we can all do a bit to help.
Biodiversity: Leg o’ Mutton Wetland
Working in line with the site management plan, current tasks includes maintenance of water levels & nesting rafts, weekly patrols, control of invasive tree & shrub species and litter removal.
Wellbeing: Community Growing Project
Growing Together is the essence of community food growing and outdoor learning. It is inclusive, cross-generational, informal, and immersive (that means we get our hands in the soil, sow, grow, explore, learn, meet new people, share ideas – and laugh lots)…whatever our age!
Our Mission
Through custodianship of our local open spaces we aspire to:
Inspire the community to be engaged
Encourage participation and ownership
Build resilience and leadership to respect the environment for present and future generations
Our Vision
Conservation • Biodiversity • Lifelong Learning • Wellbeing – for all
